Each student in the School of Humanities and Sciences is assigned an academic adviser. In addition to the help provided by individual advisers, assistance is available from the student services team in the School of Humanities and Sciences’ Dean's Office. After seeking help from their own advisers, students are welcome to bring questions to the Dean's Office staff in Muller 201; call (607) 274-3102 to make an appointment. Additionally, students may consult with advisers in the Academic Advising Center; phone (607) 274-1001.


  1. A meeting with each advisee at the beginning of the year to get acquainted.
  2. Availability during posted office hours and for individual appointments.
  3. Assistance in helping advisees find academic information regarding majors, minors, Integrative Core Curriculum (ICC), and other academic policies, procedures, and deadlines.
  4. Referrals to appropriate people and offices if he or she cannot provide the necessary assistance.
  5. A meeting with each advisee each semester, prior to course registration, to help with course selection and academic planning and to approve each advisee's academic schedule for the next term.
  6. Assistance in understanding the purposes of academic requirements and their relationship to a liberal arts education and career plans.
  7. Assistance in helping advisees learn how to make academic decisions, discover the range of options available to them, and think through the consequences of their choices.


  1. Accept responsibility for making your own decisions. An adviser will provide advice, not make decisions for you.
  2. Come prepared for appointments. During the advising period for registration, come with:
    • a list of courses you are interested in taking next term
    • alternative course selections
    • the meeting dates and times of courses, including alternative course choices
  3. After the initial appointment, advisees must initiate contact with their advisers.
  4. Contact your adviser to schedule appointments. You may be able to make an appointment by seeing your adviser before or after a class (ask the department administrative assistant for your adviser’s class schedule).
  5. Come to appointments on time; cancel appointments if you will be unable to attend. 
  6. Make an appointment to discuss midterm grades, if necessary.
  7. Discuss important decisions or questions about your education (e.g., choice of major, change of major, change of school) well before the registration period.
  8. Follow through on referrals made by your adviser (e.g., to the Office of Career Services) and be willing to discuss suggestions made by your adviser.

Understand that your adviser is advising a number of students for whom different regulations apply. Therefore, you are ultimately responsible for knowing the academic regulations and requirements which apply to you. Refer to the Ithaca College Undergraduate Catalog for this information. Monitor your progress toward completion of your degree through your HomerConnect account under the link “Degree Evaluation.”
