Lily Goulding '24 is the recipient of the Bill and Donna Bergmark Scholarship Award.

Awarded to students with a record of academic excellence who are majoring in chemistry or biochemistry.

About Lily:

My name is Lily Goulding and I am a senior chemistry major with a mathematics minor. This semester I am working with Dr. Becky Craig on her research of atmospheric aerosols. We are investigating different atmospherically relevant organic compounds (alpha pinene oxide and beta pinene oxide) and how they react under varying pH conditions, as well as the kinetics of small organic acids, specifically oxalic acid, and their interactions with hydroxyl radicals. Last summer I was accepted into the Integrated Computational and Experimental (ICE) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at North Carolina State University. I worked through the computational component of a medicinal based project. The goal of this research was to predict which compounds produce the largest bathochromic shift in the light spectra in order for the reactive carbene intermediate to be activated with visible light. In contrast to harmful UV light, which is currently being used, the shift of activation into the visible light region allows the diazirines to be attached to drug molecules in living cells and organisms.
