About Maxwell: My name is Maxwell Bridges and I'm a senior Chemistry major from Loveland, CO. I began my research journey in the Fall 2022 semester by participating in two projects here at Ithaca College. My ongoing research with Professor Akiko Fillinger is related to the applications of redox flow batteries for large-scale energy storage. The goal of this project is to examine the potential window in which glassy carbon electrodes are stable when used in aqueous neutral electrolytes for redox flow batteries. In the Spring 2023 semester, I will be continuing my research at Cornell University, where I will use scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis to further analyze the stability of the glassy carbon electrodes. As someone with a big interest in the environment, I have been fortunate enough to work with Professor Susan Allen in the Environmental Studies department on a research project project concerning the identification of microplastics and organic materials within Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, New York. My research for this project focuses on the use of different dyes to separate organic materials such as plant life from microplastics in each sample that my team and I analyze. Both of these projects have provided me with a wealth of knowledge and have opened many doors for my future interests. After my time at Ithaca College, I plan on attending graduate school for a degree in Toxicology or Chemistry.
