For Sara Belcher, playing and writing about video games has become part of her full-time job. Sara is a staff writer for Distractify, an online media company that covers pop culture and entertainment news. As associate editor for gaming, she mostly writes about trending topics in the video industry but has also explored eco-friendly topics and cryptocurrency stocks for Distractify sister sites GreenMatters and Market Realist.

Sara started at IC as a journalism major because she wanted to work with magazines but switched to a major in writing with a concentration in feature writing. At IC, Sara tutored at the Writing Center and interned for Buffalo Street Books and Nylon, a popular magazine in New York City. She also founded Distinct, a fashion and lifetime magazine that gained much publicity on campus.

On graduating, Sara freelanced until she was hired full-time by Distractify. As a staff writer, Sara produces up to four articles daily and optimizes them for search engines. Covering video games is what Sara enjoys most: “I get to interview people behind the scenes on new games, which is super exciting.” She’s interviewed cast members from the Netflix show Shadow and Bone for her articles on TV shows, and she turns a single interview into several different stories for the SEO model. Collaborating with other writers and working with topics she enjoys is greatest reward of magazine writing, Sara says.
