Meet IC Students Studying Communications, Film, Journalism, and Media

Ithaca College student Abby Sevegny, Media Literacy Major

Abby Sevegny
Hometown: North Smithfield, RI
Major: Media Literacy
Clubs: American Advertising Federation; Women in Communications; IC Flute Ensemble; Campus Band; Leadership Scholar Program

Why did you choose IC?
I chose IC because of my major as well as my ability to be involved in music as a non-major. I liked marketing, but generally gravitated to the creative side of it rather than the statistical side. When I would tour other schools, they had just marketing or just communications as a major and I would have had to pick just one. The Park School of Communications had a combined integrated marketing communications program [now Advertising, Public Relations, and Marketing Communications], which made sense to me because there is such overlap in the fields. They understood my career goals, and I really liked the class topics. Ithaca College is also a well-known music school, and music was important to me in high school so I knew I wanted to continue in college. Now I am still able to play my flute for fun in the Flute Ensemble and the Campus Band. I also was accepted to the Leadership Scholar Program, which made me confident that I would have lots of enriching experiences for my own personal enjoyment as well as my professional development while at IC. So far, my expectations have proved to be true!

Research and Internship Opportunities
I interned as the Head of Film Competition at American High, a production company in Syracuse, where I worked on planning their inaugural film festival. I also worked on set of an unreleased horror movie. I interned in the props department, where I was able work closely with actors and directors in making sure the scene's props were running smoothly and looking good on camera. Both opportunities were internships I took for credit during the summer.
Advice
Touring schools is the most valuable part of your process when choosing a school. Walking around campus and being able to really picture yourself there is the best way to get that feeling of certainty. Make sure you pick a school you love; you are spending some of the best times of your life here, so finding a school that you love that can foster that growth is important.

Annabella Di Lillo

Why I Chose Ithaca College
For the Park school and how I got experience with classes in my major from day one. I wasn't 100% sure of what I wanted to do, so being able to work within my major early helped me figure out what I liked and didn't like from the beginning.
Internships
Wakefern Food Corp.: My social media internship turned into freelancing for them!
Advice
Get involved! When you go out into your career, you probably won't be able to join an after-work club, so you might as well do it now. Also, these clubs/organizations could help with getting you a job in the future!
