Legislation that banned the use of federal funds for need-eligible incarcerated students is being reviewed for appeal. In the meantime, college programs in prisons must be privately funded by the educational institutions themselves. Neither state nor federal funding is available. With a full waiver of course tuition, the average cost of an IC class at the prison is only $8,000. Books and faculty compensation are our only direct expenses.
Ithaca College's prison education program is a pilot program. Funding was allocated for six classes, through Fall 2020, but is not guaranteed in 2021. Additionally, the program currently remains suspended due to COVID-19. Donations earmarked for IC’s Prison Education Program will help us continue. To give a gift, donate online at give.ithaca.edu, and indicate the gift should be directed to IC's Prison Education Program. To donate by check, mail to:
