Spanish (B.A.)

Ithaca College offers a Spanish major and minor that cover the diverse Spanish-speaking countries of the world, with an extensive range of introductory through advanced classes on Spanish, Latin American, and Latino/a literature, culture, film, and history. You may be interested in our master's degree in teaching Spanish as well.

As a student of Spanish, you'll have plenty of creative ways to immerse yourself in the language: writing personals for the class newspaper, writing short stories, performing in a Spanish-language play, or taking part in a mock news broadcast. Our study-abroad programs also expand your learning opportunities: you might study at the University of Valencia or choose a program in Spain or Argentina through the Center for Cross-Cultural Study.

While the curriculum focuses on every aspect of the Spanish-speaking world, you can enhance your knowledge further by choosing to live in Vecinos, our multicultural living and learning community. In addition to hosting regular Spanish conversation groups, Vecinos coordinates a Spanish-language film series, off-campus excursions to Hispanic-related events, Latin dance classes, and monthly talks by faculty. Our language center also provides Spanish newscasts, online practice exercises, and a plethora of online resources to help you enhance your own Spanish study. Spanish complements many fields of study and future careers. Picture yourself as a bilingual journalist for the website CNN en EspaƱol, as a health care professional in a Spanish-speaking country, or as a bilingual teacher in the United States or abroad. Several of our students have been chosen by the Spanish embassy to become teachers of English in public schools in Spain. Other graduates have entered fields ranging from medicine to government, social work to banking. Considering the rise in international markets and the increase in the Spanish-speaking population in the United States, your skills could take you anywhere.
