Pre-Screening Audition Requirements

There are currently pre-screening audition requirements in the following areas:

  • All Voice applicants (video recording required)
  • Undergraduate Saxophone applicants (video recording required)
    • Not required for BM Jazz Studies applicants
  • All Drum Set applicants (video recording required)
  • B.M. in Sound Recording Technology (video recording required)
  • B.M. in Composition

Materials and Deadlines

All application materials and video recordings for both the School of Music and Ithaca College must be submitted by the following dates:

  • November 1: applicants who would like to audition in December, including Early Decision applicants
  • December 1: all other applicants.

Once a student's prescreening materials are reviewed and accepted, they will need to review and confirm their audition materials for their final audition. These can be found on the Undergraduate Admission Requirements page.

Submission

All pre-screening materials must be submitted through the online Audition Form by December 1 (Early Decision submissions are due by November 1).

Information regarding acceptable electronic formats can be found below. Please note that all Undergraduate Voice, Saxophone, Drum Set, and Sound Recording Technology applicants must submit a video recording.

We support a majority of file types, which include:

  • Video: MP4, MPEG, MPG, MOV, AVI, WMV, M4V, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M2V
  • Audio: MP3, OGG, M4A, WMA, WAV, AAC, FLAC, AIFF, AIF
  • Images: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF
  • Documents: PDF, PS, DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPS, PPTX, XLS, XLSX, OPT, SXW, ODP, SXI, ODS, SXC, RTF, TXT

Accompaniment

Pre-Screening materials for voice applicants should be accompanied. Pre-Screening materials for instrumental applicants should be unaccompanied.

Bassoon

B.M. in Sound Recording Technology
  1. Two pieces of contrasting styles.
  2. Three scales and arpeggios of your choosing.
Cello B.M. in Sound Recording Technology
  1. Two pieces of contrasting styles.
  2. Three scales and arpeggios of your choosing.
Clarinet B.M. in Sound Recording Technology
  1. Two pieces of contrasting styles.
  2. Three scales and arpeggios of your choosing.
Composition B.M. in Composition
  1. Two (2) scores of original works (with sound files, if possible)
Double Bass B.M. in Sound Recording Technology
  1. 10-15 minutes of your best playing. Nicholas Walker is happy to hear whatever the applicant has prepared - whatever the applicant feels most excited about playing, even if it is not on a standard college audition list.
Drum Set All undergraduate degrees and minors

Demonstration of drum set styles. Using play-along tracks are optional:

  1. Rock/funk
  2. Slow, medium, and fast swing
  3. 3/4 swing
  4. Shuffle
  5. Samba
  6. Choose one of the above styles to play with brushes technique
Euphonium B.M. in Sound Recording Technology
  1. Two pieces of contrasting styles.
  2. Three scales and arpeggios of your choosing.
Flute B.M. in Sound Recording Technology
  1. Two pieces of contrasting styles.
  2. Three scales and arpeggios of your choosing.
Guitar B.M. in Sound Recording Technology
  1. Two pieces of contrasting styles.

Horn B.M. in Sound Recording Technology

Percussion

Note: B.M. Sound Recording Technology applicants may audition as traditional percussionists (using the requirements to the right) or on drum set only (please see requirements above listed for Drum Set).

  1. One mallet solo
  2. One timpani solo (if available)
  3. One rudimental or orchestral snare drum solo (can be played on practice pad)
  4. Optional: demonstration of drum set styles

Voice All undergraduate degrees and minors (except Jazz)

Please share your personal artistry and love of singing in two complete selections, contrasting in style, language, time period, and tempo, performed from memory. We hope you’ll showcase works that reflect your individual point of view. 

Voice B.M. in Jazz Studies
  1. One complete, memorized selection *
  2. One memorized ballad, blues selection, or jazz standard with improvisation (suggested list)

* No arias after 1750 please.

Pre-Screening materials for voice applicants should be accompanied

Voice M.M./M.S. in Music Education (optional)
  1. One memorized art song in English
  2. One memorized art song in a foreign language
  3. One additional song of your choice from traditional vocal literature (musical theater selections, jazz, or original compositions are not acceptable)

**Please limit selections to one oratorio or opera aria**
