The School of Business was proud to award the top prize to People Helping People at the 3rd Annual Sustainability Case Competition. Members of People Helping People included Cameron Miller, Erling Kristiansen, Spencer Carr, Andrew Lightner, and Zane Coffey.
The 2014 Sustainability Case competition focused on developing a marketing plan for the Greater Ithaca Activities Center. The plan will focus on increasing student awareness at college campuses across New York State about sustainability, what it means, and why it is important. Student teams developed marketing plans focused on reaching college students that include strategies for analysis, planning, implementation and assessment.
People Helping People prepared a plan to open a small New York style deli in Ithaca that would provide employment to at-risk teenagers from GIAC. The plan also brings healthy, affordable food to the North Side of Ithaca, that currently isn't available. "We hope this model will provide GIAC witha steady income stream as well as a tool to employ members of the GIAC Community." said team member Andy Lightner.
Second place went to Team Community Solutions (David Barken, Lewis Kendall, and John Winters DiMarco) and IConic Inc. (Leonard Davis) took third. $10,000 in total prize money was awarded with first receiving $5,000, second awarded $3,500 and $1,500 for third.
The overall goal is for students to learn about how sustainability issues impact the real world, locally and globally.
