ICLC 20600: Underground London (LA)

Examines the hidden histories of London lives in terms of both the physical and conceptual underground. Classes are held in museums, on walks in London, and at various underground sites.

Underground London is not just the Tube - it is the series of physical and historic layers that have built up over time, from the Romans to the modern era, all creating the London that we live in (and on) today. The course examines the hidden lives and histories that are buried under London in the physical and conceptual underground, with focus on the ways in which structures of class, race, and power intersect in material culture. Class visits explore underground rivers, tunnels, bunkers, and various museums. Note: there is an additional course fee for admission to museums. (F,S,U)
