Property and Liability

Ithaca College protects its assets through a Property Insurance Plan. This involves the College purchasing insurance to protect against risks, such as fire, weather damage, or theft, and also self-insures for a broad scope of property losses, such as computers, equipment, and building contents, as well as for third-party liability losses. Insurance deductibles may also apply, and be billed to the responsible patron. The purchase of personal property coverage by all student patrons expecting to use college owned portable equipment, is highly encouraged in order to cover these often high deductibles. See "Personal Property Insurance" below. All damage to or loss of College-owned property is to be reported to the Park School Manager of Facilities and Portable Equipment and/or Risk Management immediately to determine if the loss is insured, self-insured, or qualifies for a third-party claim.

Personal Property Insurance

The value of the average student PPECS checkout can easily reach into the tens of thousands of dollars. ACP and Thesis order values often exceed $100k! What happens when a student damages or loses PPECS resources?

  • Use of portable equipment is included in your tuition, but YOU are responsible for loss or damage to it while it is signed out in your name!
  • If something breaks or is lost, Ithaca College’s Insurance doesn’t apply until AT LEAST A $5000 deductible is met, so anything below that would need to be handled by the patron .
  • Personal Property insurance can be purchased to cover not only your own personal property (laptops, phones, electronics, etc.), but also college property entrusted to you for use on school projects such as equipment from PPECS.
  • One Option for this type of insurance is Gallagher Insurance who offers both personal property and liability insurance to college students with varying deductible options. Quotes, options and pricing can be found at https://www.collegestudentinsurance.com

Liability Insurance

Students shooting photography, film or video somewhere besides the Ithaca College campus may be asked to show proof of liability insurance. Unfolding news events are exempted (car accidents, visiting dignitaries, etc.) for news teams recording the event for upcoming news shows.

The Ithaca College Office of Risk Management will issue a certificate of insurance (COI) ONLY when a specific request is made by the location owner/manager. Do not offer to provide evidence of insurance to locations, a COI is ONLY provided when specifically requested by a location owner/manager and only after certain requirements are met. Offering up insurance when not required by the owner/manager will slow down your approval process.

Important notes:

  • The IC Office of Risk Management requires a minimum of 10 days to process a request.
  • Any entity requiring documents - such as permits, contracts, agreements, or insurance with additional insured requirements - MUST be reviewed by the College and CANNOT be signed by students on behalf of the College. Bring those to the attention of the Dean's Office ASAP.

Additional permits may be required depending on the location of your shoot for example. City of Ithaca or other municipalities, NYS Parks, Cornell University campus, or other private property.
