Hourly paid employees that are regularly scheduled to work at least 1,000 hours per fiscal year, and salaried staff scheduled to work fifty percent or more during the fiscal year in a job that is not temporary, or faculty who teach at least seven (7) credit hours both semesters, or a total of at least fourteen (14) credit hours per academic year are eligible for benefits. Certain benefits are prorated for those employees whose annual percent of full time is less than 100%. The percent of full time for staff is calculated on the basis of hours per week and weeks per year. Staff and administrators who are scheduled to work fewer than 1,000 hours or who are hired for a temporary assignment lasting less than six months receive only statutory benefits, such as New York State Disability, New York State Paid Sick Leave, Workers’ Compensation and Social Security.

a. Full-Time Employees (benefits-eligible) – Staff who, depending on position, work a 37.5- or 40- hour week on a 52-week basis with anticipated continued employment or faculty who are issued a contract at 100% full-time. Eligibility for benefits is subject to any waiting period or other limitations established by the College.

b. Part-Time Employees (benefits-eligible) – Staff who work at least 1,000 hours per fiscal year, with anticipated continued employment and faculty who teach at least seven (7) credit hours both semesters or a total of at least fourteen (14) credit hours per academic year. Some benefits may be prorated, contact the Benefits Department for further information. Eligibility for benefits is subject to any waiting period or other limitations established by the College.

c. Part-Time Employees (not benefits-eligible) – Staff who work fewer than 1,000 hours per fiscal year and faculty who teach less than seven (7) credit hours both semesters or a total of at least fourteen (14) credit hours per semester receive statutory benefits only, such as New York State Disability, New York State Paid Sick Leave, Workers’ Compensation, and Social Security.

d. Temporary Employees (not benefits-eligible) – Staff who are hired for a limited period of time, usually six months or less, receive statutory benefits only, such as New York State disability, New York State Paid Sick Leave, Workers’ Compensation, and Social Security. A staff employee whose temporary assignment will exceed six months and who will be scheduled to work more than 1,000 hours, may be entitled to certain additional benefits. However, benefits should not be offered to a temporary staff employee in this category without prior review and approval by the Office of Human Resources and the Budget Office.

Faculty who are hired for a limited period of time, usually for less than one Academic Year, receive statutory benefits to include Workers’ Compensation, New York State Paid Sick Leave, and Social Security. Faculty are not eligible for New York State Disability.

A staff employee who begins as a temporary employee and is subsequently hired on a full-time basis, will be eligible for most benefits as of the date the staff employee’s status is changed to benefit eligible.

e. Student Employees are covered by Workers’ Compensation, New York State Paid Sick Leave, and New York State Disability.

If the budget status of a part-time or temporary position is “non-benefits eligible” the supervisor or department chair must ensure that the scheduled commitment remains below the limits established for benefits. If, because of the additional potential financial commitment incurred a position should need to be re-categorized as “benefits-eligible,” prior approval must be obtained from the Budget Office before hours exceed the 1000 hour-limit or credits exceed a maximum of 14 per academic year.
