What is the Bachelor of Music in Combination with an Outside Field (BMO) degree?
- A BMO degree is a Bachelor of Music (BM) degree with the full core of music requirements and expectations, as with any other BM degree.
- A BMO includes an Outside Field consisting of a set of 24 credits approved by your outside field advisor and the associate dean of music
What are the requirements for the courses in an outside field? How do I help my advisee design their outside field plan?
- There are no specific requirements for the courses in the outside field, other than the fact that the courses should cohere together in some way. (The courses can be of any numbered level, for example, and in one or multiple departments or schools.)
- Consult with your advisee to help them choose a collection of courses that best suits their goals for their outside field studies. They can build an outside field by beginning with the courses in a minor and adding to it, or by putting together a set of courses not related to a minor at all. Courses counting toward the Outside Field cannot also fulfill ICC ICSM, capstone, or Academic Writing requirements. However, courses in the outside field may satisfy Diversity (DV), Writing Intensive (WI), and/or Quantitative Literacy (QL) attributes.
What do I need to do to become a BMO student’s advisor?
- Meet to discuss the student’s interests and goals in the prospective outside field, and consult with the student to develop a plan with appropriate courses that address these interests and goals. Approve the student’s online BMO Outside Field Approval form if you are comfortable with their plan. This form will be sent to you via email after the student completes and submits it.
- The student must contact their outside field advisor to discuss their plans before submitting the online form.
What happens if a student makes an outside field plan and then some of those classes aren’t offered or don’t fit in their schedule later on?
- The student can come up with an alternate plan (working with their outside field advisor) and submit a new form at any time.
