WHAT IS THE THEATRE STUDIES PROGRAM?
A highly individualized interdisciplinary education in theatre combined with a broad liberal arts education. Students develop into holistic theatre artists who use theatre to reflect and shape the society in which we live. Theatre Studies students are highly encouraged to pursue additional majors or minors outside of the Center for Theatre and Dance. Theatre Studies students cultivate skills in theatre creation as well as the communication and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate almost any field.

Naturally curious students looking for a broad and flexible four years of study across multiple disciplines. Ideal candidates possess an understanding of inclusive practices and social equity, as well as a creative and collaborative instinct.
WHAT WILL YOUR FOUR YEARS LOOK LIKE?
YEAR ONE – FOUNDATIONS
To encourage community and respect across disciplines, the entire first-year class in the Center for Theatre and Dance takes foundational courses such as Introduction to Professional Theatre, Race & Theatre in The United States, and Technical Theatre Practicum.
Additionally, first year Theatre Studies students take courses like Theatre Studies Foundations and The Actor’s Process, as well as liberal arts electives.
YEAR TWO – SKILL BUILDING
Second year Theatre Studies students develop their skills through exploration of specialized areas of theatre like directing, playwriting, and dramaturgy. Students gain flexibility as theatre-makers in classes like Theatre History, Introduction to Theatrical Design, and Theatre Administration.
YEAR THREE – RESPONSIBILITY, CHANGE, AND LONDON
Third year Theatre Studies students synthesize the techniques they have acquired and develop an increased sense of independence in applying those skills. Additionally, students may pursue opportunities assistant directing or serving as a dramaturg for Mainstage productions.
Third year students also have the opportunity, and are highly encouraged, to study abroad at the Ithaca College London Center, where they will immerse themselves in experiential coursework that features internship opportunities, performance classes, Stage Combat, lectures, discussions, weekly theatrical walks through London, and play-going.
YEAR FOUR – REFLECTION AND FORWARD MOTION
Fourth year Theatre Studies students reflect on their four years in an interdisciplinary liberal arts degree in Theatre Studies Capstone and make plans for entering the theatre profession or pursuing advanced study. Students deepen their study and application of theatre practice with advanced courses like Directing II, Playwriting II and Dramaturgy II.
Additionally, the entire fourth year class in the Center for Theatre and Dance attends Field Studies in New York City: a networking week of panels, workshops, and seminars with CTD alumni who are working in all aspects of the industry. You will hear stories of career triumphs and learn insightful lessons to help you jumpstart your career.
