Areya Muraca is a designer, artist, and Ithaca College 2019 alum who has returned to Ithaca College as a graphic designer in the marketing communications division. As an integrated marketing communications (now advertising, public relations, and marketing communications) major, Areya spent most of her time in the Park School until her sophomore year, when she decided to pursue an art minor in graphic design. She found work she was passionate about in design, which complemented her studies in marketing communications and helped her understand how visual design could shape the way a message is communicated.

As an IC student, Areya worked as a digital art lab monitor in the graphic design studio, helping students with Adobe programs, maintaining the printers and studio space, and creating posters for guest speakers. She also interned for Cornell Cinema, designing posters and flyers for upcoming films. In her last year as a student, Areya designed the Class of 2019 logo for Ithaca College and exhibited her design work in the provost’s exhibition and the senior art show Between You & Me .

“The graphic design minor at Ithaca College opened up the world of visual arts to me. It showed me how essential design is to maintaining integrity in brand and marketing work, and how it can also be used experimentally for self-expression as an artist.”

The summer after graduating, Areya decided to stay in Ithaca and worked as a graphic design intern for local space tech startup Ursa Space Systems. She then worked at the Paleontological Research Institution, doing marketing and design work for both the Museum of the Earth and Cayuga Nature Center. After a few years of doing both marketing and design work, Areya decided to focus solely on graphic design. She joined eCornell as a graphic designer, creating marketing materials for students taking online certificate programs through Cornell University. Two years later she returned to Ithaca College as a graphic designer.

Today, Areya designs a variety of digital and print work to recruit prospective students and maintain brand identity and also manages a library of digital assets. Most recently, she worked with her team to design an “I Spy”-themed cover for IC’s alumni magazine, ICView.
