Pedro X. Molina (2019-21)

Smiling man

Also known as "PxMolinA," is an internationally acclaimed political cartoonist, illustrator and journalist from Nicaragua. In December 2018, when the offices of news media outlet Confidencial were taken over by government forces, Molina fled his country during a national crackdown on journalists and government critics. He and his colleagues continue to publish daily in Confidencial.com.ni, either from exile or from other locations in Nicaragua.

Molina’s cartoons, caricatures, editorial illustrations, and comics have been printed or published online in many international major publications, such as Project Syndicate, Politico.com, Cartoon Movement, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News, Courrier International, The Vancouver Sun, London Free Press, Der Standard, El Universal, La Tercera, La Nación, China Daily, Newsweek, The Week, UTNE Reader, Ekonom, Dunya, Jira Times, Khaleej Times, Daily News and Analysis (DNA), Modern Weekly, BBC, The Vienna Review, France 24 (TV news show).

In summer 2019, Molina won the prestigious Maria Moors Cabot Award in international journalism from Columbia Journalism School for “career excellence and coverage of the Western Hemisphere that furthers inter-American understanding.” The awards committee described him as “one of Nicaragua’s sharpest observers,” writing that “Molina uses his pen and wit to take aim not only at the repressive government of President Daniel Ortega, but also at human rights abuses throughout the Americas and the world.”

In 2018, Molina won the Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award from Cartoonists Rights Network International, as well as the Excellence in Journalism award from the Inter American Press Association.

Molina’s work has been published in various books, including several editions of Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year by Pelican in the United States and the Gallimard/Cartooning for Peace collection in France. He is also an active member of nine organizations of cartoonists/journalists around the world, including Cartooning for Peace and the New York Times’ Cartoonists and Writers Syndicate.
