Our pre-professional training program puts students in the driver’s seat. From your first semester you are given the chance to join a stage management team on a fully realized production. Over the course of your studies you prepare for growing responsibilities and will be an important part of a stage management team on several shows before graduating, including opportunities to work on plays, musicals, opera, dance and the development of new work . At Ithaca College, we are exclusively committed to the undergraduate experience 100% of our resources are dedicated to training undergraduate students.

At Ithaca College, you will gain an abundant, modular skillset that supports your professional aspirations while you further develop your personal interests. Our training prepares you for pursuits in artistic management, through the lens of theatrical stage management. You will be prepared for a career in theatre and will also have the skills to transition into a great number of allied fields and adjacent industries.
Professional Practice is Integrated into Your Experience
Our program was voted #1 for our theatrical productions by the Princeton Review, and Stage Managers are at the helm of all of them. We incorporate professional practice into all our projects and are committed to antiracist theatre making. Our auditions, rehearsals and performances incorporate safe intimacy protocol, as well as promote mental wellness and physical safety for everyone involved. Our facilities provide experience in a variety of venues, from state-of-the-art to storefront/black box , with a recent $10 million renovation and frequent upgrades to technology and equipment.. Our students gain first-hand experience in the most up-to-date theatre technologies and , software, including moving lights, moving scenery, digital sound, and music-based projects with full orchestras while developing a consciousness of green practice that decreases our environmental impact.

At Ithaca College, your mentors and faculty have an ongoing presence in the business, as well as teaching experience. The stage management curriculum is designed and delivered by professionals with experience on Broadway, at major regional theatres, on tour, and everywhere in between. We prioritize cultural and community consciousness that advances the field of stage management and the performing arts at large. Students learn about current practice in “the business” while also incorporating avenues for advocacy and change. Our students are the leaders of tomorrow, and we are committed to investing a sense of ownership and accountability in all of them.

When you graduate from Ithaca College, you join the network of our successful alumni whose work can be seen in New York City, in regional theatres across the country, on tour, and in allied fields such as film, television, and large-scale industrial events. In your senior year you connect with this alumni network through our intensive week-long “Field Studies in NYC” program, in addition to many robust networking opportunities throughout your time with us. In our program you learn how to market yourself effectively with resume building, portfolio crafting, and utilizing the tools and instruments of the digital age.
