First Time & Renewal Approval Process

First Time Student Driver Approval Process

The steps below are applicable for first-time driver approval only.

Students must complete, in the order listed, the following steps to become approved to drive College Vehicles:

  1. Read the Ithaca College Student Driver Handbook.
  2. Become familiar with the Ithaca College Driving College Vehicles Policy.
  3. Complete the United Educators (UE) online safety course Driver Safety Fundamentals; allow one (1) hour to register, complete the safety course, and take the test. The Ithaca College Driving College Vehicles Policy and the Student Driver Handbook always supersede, so it is important to be familiar with the policies and procedures contained within.   Be sure to review the UE Course instruction document, it contains information you will need to access the course.
  4. Save a PDF of the UE course completion certificate to upload to the Driver Information Form.  This is required in order to process your MVR.
  5. Submit a Driver Information Form to Risk Management.

Renewal Student Driver Approval Process

In order to renew student driving privileges, a student must:

  1. Resubmit a Driver Information Form every twelve (12) months
  2. Complete the United Educators CourseDefensive Driving Strategies: Get There Safely.  Be sure to review the instruction document since it contains information you will need to access the course.
  3. Save a PDF of the UE course completion certificate and provide to Risk Management at riskmanagement@ithaca.edu.
  4. Review the Student Driver Handbook each year.

The student and their respective supervisor (this must be an Ithaca College Staff or Faculty member, not another student) will be notified regarding their approval status.

UE (United Educators) online courses are a resource to offer driver safety awareness and training; the courses are not meant to completely fulfill each institution's needs, but rather enhance driver awareness.

Below are a few instances where the UE training differs from College Policy/Procedures:

  • Students are restricted to mini-vans that do not exceed an 8-person occupancy.
  • Students are restricted to SUV's that do not exceed an 8-person occupancy.
  • College vehicles may not have all emergency equipment referenced in the training.
  • Student drivers cannot exceed three hours of driving before switching to another driver.
