Planning to study abroad, travel internationally, or participate in service trips, internships, or recreational travel outside the U.S.? Cayuga Health at Ithaca College offers specialized Travel Medicine Services to help keep you healthy and safe wherever your journey takes you.
Who Should Schedule a Travel Medicine Visit?

You should schedule a travel consultation if you are:

  • Traveling outside of the United States for study abroad, research, internships, or service-learning programs
  • Visiting family internationally or planning personal/leisure travel to countries with different health risks
  • Attending a global conference or sporting event in another region
  • Traveling to areas with specific vaccination, medication, or health clearance requirements

We recommend scheduling your appointment at least 4–6 weeks before travel to allow time for vaccinations and medication planning.

Services Available

During your Travel Medicine visit, we will:

  • Review your destination(s), itinerary, and planned activities
  • Assess your medical history and current medications in the context of your travel plans
  • Provide destination-specific advice , including:
    • Food and water safety
    • Insect-borne illness prevention (e.g., malaria, dengue, Zika)
    • Altitude illness prevention
    • Environmental and climate-related precautions
  • Administer necessary travel vaccinations , such as:
    • Hepatitis A & B
    • Typhoid
    • Yellow Fever (referral if not available on site)
    • Meningococcal
    • Japanese Encephalitis (if required)
    • Tdap, MMR, and polio boosters
  • Prescribe travel medications :
    • Antimalarials
    • Antibiotics for traveler’s diarrhea
    • Motion sickness or altitude sickness medications
  • Provide official documentation for health forms, immunization records, or travel clearance as required by host countries or programs

Offer a travel health kit checklist and educational handouts tailored to your destination

After Your Trip

If you feel ill after returning from travel—especially if you develop fever, diarrhea, or rash—please schedule an appointment promptly. Some travel-related illnesses can present days or weeks after your return.
