Photography

Our photography tells the story of Ithaca College through real moments of connection, curiosity, and creativity. Each image should capture the energy and authenticity of our community—the spark of discovery in a student’s eyes, the collaboration between mentors and peers, the beauty and motion of life on South Hill. Through honest, dynamic imagery, we show the world what it feels like to be part of Ithaca College.

Using Photography Assets

As you select and use imagery, focus on photos that feel natural, dynamic, and full of purpose. Use these dos and don’ts as a quick reference when choosing or creating images to keep our visual storytelling consistent, compelling, and true to the IC spirit.

DoDon't
  • Use imagery to help tell a story and create a sense of context.
  • Do not use imagery that is overly posed.
  • Define the mood through visual storytelling. Is the mood inspiring? Serious? Friendly?
  • Do not use obviously generic stock photography.
  • Avoid clichés like handshakes, people talking on the phone or behind a computer, pointing, or obvious metaphors.
  • Do not use illustrations without reason.
  • Create imagery that is active, vibrant, passionate, and energetic, showing movement and action.
  • Do not use collages (photo + photo, photo + text, text + gradient, photo + graphic or logo, etc.)
  • Set up shots that are informal and appear almost accidental rather than posed.

  • Make sure images are well lit and that lighting is consistent when multiple images are going to be used throughout materials.

  • Have a point of focus—focus can range from a single point to an overarching composition.

  • Use high resolution with high-quality imagery. Images should not be blurry, grainy, stretched, pixelated, or badly lit. Make sure images are appropriately sized for materials across platforms and mediums.

Not at this time.

If you know specifically of any older images that you use on a regular basis, please let us know. As we move forward with Widen, we are focused on delivering highest quality, current, and curated assets to the campus community. We want the community to share these types of images with us for inclusion in Widen as well. We will be developing a formal process for submissions and will provide you with a list of the descriptive information we will need in order to properly tag each image for searching.
