Responsibilites

Nightly Campus Patrols

Student Auxiliary Safety Patrol (SASP) members patrol the Ithaca College campus in pairs between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. on the weeknights and 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m on the weekends. They check all exterior doors of residential halls to make sure the doors are secured. Members act as eyes and ears for the patrol staff by enforcing quiet hours, and various laws. They also respond to various calls to assist public safety officers.

A great benefit to having SASP perform such nightly patrols is the members' visibility. Their presence helps make the campus safer, increasing the sense of security and well-being throughout the campus.

Campus Escorts

Between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., SASP patrols conduct on-campus walking escorts for the campus community. Anyone feeling unsafe and desiring an escort within campus can call the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management (Public Safety) at (607) 274-3333, dial 911 on any campus phone, or contact our dispatch center on a blue-light phone by pressing the "call" button.

Special Event Details

Various organizations on campus, such as the Bureau of Concerts and the athletics department often contract SASP members to be present at campus events. Duties at such events include crowd control, traffic details, and security. SASP is highly visible during such events, thus providing an increased sense of safety.

Blue Light and Emergency Phone Checks

Once a month, from 6:00 p.m. to 9 p.m., a group of three SASP members checks all the blue lights around campus.  They check for volume levels through the blue light, that the light works, and that the blue light box is operable, among other things.  Aside from blue lights, which are all exterior, a group of three SASP members also check all of the interior emergency phones on campus once a month for similar issues.
