Matt Weil, '24, worked as an intern for NASA.

Matthew Weil, Physics B.S., with double minors in Computer Science and Data Science, class of 2024, has utilized R extensively to perform significant work on methane emissions in New York State, which is funded by notable state grants and has led to briefings with major state and federal environmental bodies. His results from this research have been featured in academic journals and presented at prestigious conferences such as the American Physical Society’s Annual March Meeting in 2023.

Matthew has also been active in other collaborate research endeavors, including Physics Education Research with the Computer Science Department and asteroid classification research with the Department of Mathematics. Matthew has been a full-time member of the varsity men’s track and field team, balancing both academics, research and athletic commitments throughout his entire time here at Ithaca College.

In his spare time, Matthew indulges his passion for the outdoors through hiking and drone flying, and he expresses his creativity and technical precision through music, playing the piano and trumpet.

Achievements:

  • Published in the Journal of Undergraduate Reports in Physics.
  • Co-Author on a paper published in Atmosphere.
  • Presented research findings at multiple national conferences, including the American Geophysical Union in December 2024, and received the Best Undergraduate Poster and Presenter Award at the American Physical Society March Meeting 2023.
  • Awarded a $2,000 travel grant by the Ithaca College Community Foundation to present his NASA Student Airborne Research Program summer research project at AGU 2024.
